Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding Brings Centimeter-Level Ranging to Asset Tracking — Here’s What’s Actually Shipping
Bluetooth 6.0 launched in August 2024 with Channel Sounding as its headline feature — a two-method ranging stack combining phase-based ranging (PBR) and round-trip time (RTT) that the Bluetooth SIG now markets as centimeter-level accuracy. Two years on, the feature is no longer a spec sheet. Three shipping announcements in the last three weeks turned Channel Sounding into a procurement decision.
What’s actually moving
Google Pixel Tag (Aug 12 announce, Nov 11 ship, $29 single / $99 four-pack). Google’s product page confirms the tag pairs UWB with Channel Sounding for “visual distance and directional cues” — and Channel Sounding works against any Android phone with Bluetooth 6.0, not just Pixel hardware. IP67, replaceable coin cell for a year, UWB-only fallback on older phones. Hackster covered the launch as the first mainstream consumer deployment.
Silicon Labs BG2B SoC (Aug 6, 2026). Silicon Labs’ BG2B page claims Channel Sounding silicon compliant with both Apple and Google precision-finding specs — the first chip vendor to publicly position for cross-ecosystem support. The BG2B targets coin-cell asset tags, healthcare wearables, and ESL labels.
Nordic nRF54L15 and NXP MCX W72x. Nordic’s nRF54L15 prototyping platform reached mass production earlier in 2026; NXP’s MCX W72x Cortex-M33 SoC added Channel Sounding in May 2025. Across the three vendors, BT6.0 Channel Sounding modules are buyable at industrial volumes, not dev-kit quantities.
The procurement takeaway
Three questions before committing budget:
- Accuracy class. PBR does the centimeter work; RTT adds robustness against spoofing and multi-path. Vendors publishing both numbers in their datasheets (BG2B, nRF54L15) are the credible Tier 1.
- Ecosystem lock-in. Apple is reportedly preparing iOS 27 support (per EE Times’ June SDK coverage); Google shipped first. Multi-ecosystem support is now a 12-month question, not 36. Build data export into vendor selection today.
- Battery life vs update rate. Centimeter ranging burns more current than proximity-only BLE. 1 Hz PBR is realistic on a coin cell for a year; 10 Hz is not. Map use case to update rate before pricing.
